Why I Accepted Obi’s VP Offer In 2023 — Datti Baba-Ahmed

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, says he accepted the party’s 2023 vice-presidential ticket out of sympathy for Peter Obi and a desire to serve Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with Symfoni, Baba-Ahmed said Obi had approached three prominent politicians before him, but all declined to join his presidential bid.

According to him, he felt compelled to support Obi after observing the difficulties he faced in securing a running mate, describing himself as a volunteer acting in the national interest.

The former senator, who recently left the Labour Party for the Peoples Redemption Party, stressed that his support for Obi had limits and that the former Anambra governor does not determine his political future.

Baba-Ahmed also questioned Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party over internal disputes, arguing that leadership challenges exist in every political platform and should be resolved rather than avoided.

“He does not own my politics. He does not own me. I am independent,” Baba-Ahmed said, distancing himself from his former running mate and reaffirming his political autonomy.
