The Federal Government has launched an ambitious nationwide sports infrastructure revolution, approving a sweeping upgrade of major sporting facilities across the country in what officials described as a bold move to return Nigeria to the pinnacle of global sports.
The massive intervention, spearheaded through the National Sports Commission (NSC), will see the complete rehabilitation and modernization of the iconic Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja alongside the revival of critical sports infrastructure nationwide.
In a statement on Wednesday, the NSC disclosed that the projects would include upgrades to tracks, floodlights, media centres and athlete facilities at the Abuja stadium, as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art High Performance Centre and an anti-doping laboratory aimed at meeting international standards.
The commission also revealed plans for the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, development of training pitches, and a major overhaul of medical facilities with new medical equipment to boost athletes’ welfare and performance.
According to the statement, the Federal Government has also approved the redevelopment of the existing 200-room athletes’ hostel into a fully functional hotel, while a new sports centre will be developed to provide office spaces for sports federations and other stakeholders.
“The projects are aimed at repositioning Nigerian sports and restoring key facilities to international standards,” the NSC stated.
Beyond Abuja, the Federal Government said the initiative would spread across the country through the rehabilitation of sports infrastructure in various states, direct support for future National Sports Festival hosts, and the construction of mini sports centres nationwide.
The commission added that sports facilities would also be established in selected tertiary institutions as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots and school sports development and create centres of excellence for talent discovery.
Describing the investments as unprecedented, the NSC said the projects represent the first phase of a broader sports development agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope programme.
“The unprecedented investments align with the Renewed Hope Agenda and shared prosperity vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement said.
The commission stressed that the intervention is designed not only to revive Nigerian sports but also to transform the sector into a major vehicle for youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development and national unity.
Sports stakeholders have long lamented the decay of facilities across the country, with many national stadiums and training centres falling below international standards over the years. The latest intervention is expected to trigger renewed optimism among athletes, coaches and sports administrators ahead of major continental and global competitions.
