The Federal Government has applauded Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital over the successful patent registration of GASTROPEX-BH, describing the feat as a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s health research and innovation sector.
In a statement issued recently, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, said the development signals the growing capacity of Nigerian medical institutions and professionals to produce indigenous solutions capable of transforming healthcare delivery.
Pate praised the management, staff, and researchers of the Bauchi-based teaching hospital for what he called their unwavering commitment to scientific advancement, healthcare excellence, and innovation-driven research.
“The successful patent registration of GASTROPEX-BH is a significant milestone for Nigeria’s health research and innovation ecosystem,” the minister stated.
According to him, the achievement underscores the importance of sustained investment in research, local innovation, and human capacity development as key drivers of a stronger healthcare system in Nigeria.
The minister reserved special commendation for the innovators behind the project — Dr. Aminu Muhammed Umar and Dr. Kefas John Bwala of the Department of Surgery — whose research efforts culminated in the development and patent registration of the medical innovation.
He noted that their dedication and intellectual contribution demonstrate the immense potential within Nigeria’s medical and scientific community.
Pate further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting policies and initiatives that promote medical research, scientific innovation, and institutional collaboration as part of broader efforts to reposition the nation’s healthcare sector.
“The Federal Government remains committed to encouraging innovations capable of improving patient outcomes and advancing national health priorities,” he said.
The ministry also expressed optimism that the breakthrough would inspire more Nigerian researchers, clinicians, and health institutions to pursue impactful innovations with the potential to strengthen healthcare delivery across Nigeria and the African continent.
