Lecturers May Resume Agitation Over Unmet Agreements — ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned of possible fresh industrial unrest in Nigerian universities over what it described as the slow and selective implementation of its 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.

Addressing journalists in Sokoto, the union’s zonal coordinator, Abubakar Sabo, accused both federal and state governments of failing to fully implement key aspects of the agreement, including academic allowances, promotion arrears, salary shortfalls and unpaid deductions.

“The Sokoto Zone is deeply disturbed that several federal and state universities are yet to fully implement major components of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement,” Sabo said.

He added: “We call on both the federal and state governments to faithfully implement every component of the agreement in the interest of industrial harmony, stability and sustainable development of Nigerian universities.”

The union also raised concerns over unpaid salary awards, withheld salaries linked to the 2022 strike, delayed pensions and welfare issues affecting lecturers across the country.

ASUU further criticised recent education policies, including the proposed foreign-affiliated universities framework and what it described as politically motivated appointments in tertiary institutions, warning that continued neglect could destabilise the university system.
