PenCom Launches Free Healthcare Scheme For Poor Pensioners, Opens Registration For 30,000 Retirees

The National Pension Commission has launched the pilot phase of PenCare, a free healthcare initiative targeting low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, with registration now open for 30,000 pensioners across the country.

Announcing the development on Monday, the commission said the programme is aimed at easing the healthcare burden on vulnerable senior citizens struggling with rising medical costs amid harsh economic realities.

According to PenCom, the initiative is specifically designed for retirees aged 60 years and above who earn monthly pensions of not more than ₦70,000.

“The initiative is designed to support retirees aged 60 years and above earning monthly pensions of not more than ₦70,000, providing improved access to healthcare and social protection for vulnerable senior citizens,” the commission stated.

The scheme, which is being rolled out in phases, is expected to provide free healthcare services and strengthen social protection for thousands of pensioners who often face difficulties accessing quality medical care after retirement.

Stakeholders in the pension sector have described the programme as a major intervention capable of cushioning the impact of economic hardship on elderly Nigerians, many of whom survive on meagre monthly pensions.

The commission noted that registration for the pilot phase has commenced nationwide, urging eligible retirees to take advantage of the opportunity.
