Nigeria Seeks Re-Election To ITU Council For 2027–2030 Term

Nigeria has formally declared its intention to retain its seat on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027–2030 term, signaling its continued commitment to shaping global digital policy and connectivity frameworks.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the country’s candidature on the sidelines of the 2026 ITU Council Meeting in Geneva.

According to the minister, Nigeria—an ITU member since 1961—has played an active and consistent role within the Union, contributing to key global discussions and policy directions. He noted that the country has provided leadership on critical issues such as submarine cable resilience and has been a strong advocate for more inclusive global participation in advancing meaningful connectivity.

Tijani emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening its contributions to the ITU’s work, particularly as preparations intensify for the upcoming ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2026 later this year.

“We remain committed to deepening our contribution to the work of the Union, in service of a stronger, more responsive global digital ecosystem,” he said.

He also expressed optimism that Nigeria would continue to receive the backing of other member states as it seeks re-election, stressing the importance of collaboration in building a more inclusive and resilient global digital future.

Nigeria’s renewed bid comes amid growing global focus on digital infrastructure, connectivity, and equitable access to emerging technologies.
