Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Atiku Abubakar has criticised a recent advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), accusing it of attempting to restrict press freedom and tighten control over public discourse ahead of elections.
In a statement posted on his official X handle on Saturday, Atiku described the NBC directive as part of a recurring pattern of “heavy-handed” regulations introduced during election periods.
He argued that the advisory undermines Nigeria’s broadcast industry, which he said has earned global respect for its professionalism and resilience.
“Our media industry has grown into a formidable institution… it is alarming that, each time elections approach, the NBC resorts to directives that do more to silence dissent,” he said.
Atiku insisted that ethical journalism standards should not be selectively enforced or used as political tools, adding that media regulation must remain consistent and not “seasonal.”
He further warned that the timing and tone of the NBC’s latest guidelines suggest a broader attempt to control narratives rather than promote transparency in the electoral process.
The NBC had earlier issued a notice reminding broadcasters to maintain neutrality, avoid expressing personal opinions as fact, ensure balanced coverage, and uphold respect for human dignity.
The commission also cautioned that violations, including bias, intimidation of guests, or denial of fair hearing would attract sanctions under broadcast regulations.
