Wadagni Wins Benin Presidential Election In Landslide

Romuald Wadagni has claimed a sweeping victory in Benin’s presidential election, securing 94 percent of the vote, according to provisional results released by the electoral commission.

His main rival, Paul Hounkpe, conceded defeat ahead of the final tally, extending “republican congratulations” and urging national unity.

Despite the landslide outcome, voter turnout varied significantly, particularly in urban areas where participation ranged between 20 and 40 percent. Overall turnout was put at 58.75 percent, with observers describing the process as largely peaceful and well organised.

Backed by outgoing president Patrice Talon, Wadagni’s victory points to policy continuity following years of economic growth and infrastructure development.

However, the incoming administration faces pressing challenges, including persistent poverty, widening inequality, and growing jihadist threats in northern parts of the country.

With presidential terms now extended to seven years, Wadagni is expected to remain in office until the next election cycle in 2033, giving him a lengthy window to tackle the nation’s security and socio-economic issues.
