Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has made history as the first Nigerian and African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
He was honoured in the “Early Influence” category alongside global music icons such as Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons.
The announcement was made during a broadcast of American Idol in the United States, with the induction ceremony scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
Other honourees include Sade Adu in the “Performer” category, alongside Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan.
Reacting to the development, organisers said: “More than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals participated in the voting process.”
The recognition comes years after Fela’s death and follows his earlier posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
