Nigerian Shippers’ Council Orders Suspension Of New Shipping Tariffs

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has ordered all shipping lines and their agencies to suspend the implementation of recently approved tariffs, citing concerns over their timing, structure, and potential impact on port users and the wider logistics chain.

TheMatrix Newspaper reports that protests erupted at Nigerian ports as freight forwarders and clearing agents shut down operations in Lagos, rejecting recent increases in shipping charges by major international shipping lines like Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), amongst others.

Demonstrators accuse the companies of ignoring regulatory directives and worsening the cost of doing business.

Reacting in a late-night statement on Friday, the Council said the directive was issued following engagements with critical stakeholders who raised substantive objections to the tariff hike.

The NSC, which serves as the economic regulator of Nigeria’s port and shipping sector, emphasized that the suspension was necessary to safeguard fair competition, transparency, and stability in the maritime industry.

“All affected operators are mandated to revert to, and apply strictly, the tariff regime that was in force immediately prior to the said increase,” the statement read.

It warned that any deviation from the directive would constitute a breach of regulatory compliance and attract sanctions in line with existing laws.

The Council assured stakeholders that a definitive position would be communicated after comprehensive consultations and internal review processes are concluded. It reiterated its commitment to effective regulation, protection of cargo interests, and the promotion of an efficient and equitable maritime transport system.

The NSC urged all operators to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the directive.
