Lecturers Shut Down UNILAG Over Salary Cuts

The Academic Staff Union of Universities chapter at University of Lagos has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as “amputated” salaries paid to its members for January and February 2026.

The decision followed an emergency meeting of the union on Tuesday, according to a communiqué signed by the chapter’s chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and secretary, Adesina Arikawe.

The union said the strike will begin on Wednesday, March 11, and will continue until the university management pays the withheld portions of the salaries in full.

ASUU alleged that the university paid reduced salaries to its members, with lecturers on the Akoka campus reportedly not receiving Earned Academic Allowances, while those at the Idi-Araba campus were denied both Earned Academic Allowances and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance.

The lecturers described the deductions as unacceptable and directed members to withdraw their services until the issue is resolved.

The development comes months after the Federal Government and ASUU reached a renegotiated agreement in 2025 that introduced a 40 per cent salary increase for lecturers under the Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary structure and a new Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance aimed at improving academic welfare and stabilising public universities.
