FAAN To Shut MMIA Terminal 1 For 22 Months From March 2026

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, will be shut from March 2026 for a 22-month rehabilitation and expansion project.

To ensure continuity of operations, FAAN said an 8,000-square-metre temporary international departure terminal—over 90 per cent completed—will handle outbound international passengers during the closure. About five to six international airlines will initially operate from the temporary facility.

International arrivals and cargo operations will continue without disruption using existing airport infrastructure.

The project includes the construction of a skywalk linking Terminals 1 and 2, upgrades to the airport road network, and expansion of apron space to accommodate wide-body aircraft.

FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, assured passengers of a seamless transition but advised travellers to arrive earlier than usual once operations commence at the temporary terminal.

The rehabilitation is aimed at boosting capacity, improving passenger experience, and modernising facilities at one of Nigeria’s busiest international airports.
