Nigerian Govt to Arraign Suspects In Yelwata Massacre Today

The Federal Government has announced that suspects linked to the June 2025 Yelwata killings in Benue State will be formally charged in court on Monday.

In a statement issued Sunday by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, officials confirmed that the accused persons will appear before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The arraignment follows what the government described as “a painstaking investigation and collaboration by security agencies.”

The Attorney General’s office assured Nigerians that justice will be pursued to “send a strong signal to the enemies of the country acting under any disguise.

The statement, signed by media aide Kamarudeen Ogundele, also reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property as enshrined in the Constitution.

“The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wishes to assure Nigerians that justice will be ensured in the matter, to send a strong signal to the enemies of the country acting under any disguise.”

The Yelwata massacre occurred between June 13 and 14, 2025, when suspected armed herdsmen launched coordinated attacks on homes, a local market, and a Catholic mission in Guma Local Government Area. More than 100 people were killed, houses were set ablaze, and about 3,000 residents were displaced.

President Tinubu had earlier condemned the violence and directed law enforcement agencies to track down and prosecute those responsible. Monday’s arraignment marks a significant step toward accountability in one of the deadliest attacks in Benue State in recent years.
