The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has lifted the indefinite suspension placed on Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, clearing him of allegations of gross misconduct and restoring all his rights and privileges within the party.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) held on Tuesday at its national headquarters in Abuja, following the submission and consideration of a report by a committee set up to investigate the allegations against the governor.
In a major political development, the party also announced Governor Yusuf’s immediate elevation to the position of National Leader of the NNPP, describing him as the highest elected office holder produced by the party.
According to the party, the suspension imposed in 2025 has now been formally withdrawn, with the NWC, in consultation with the party’s Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr Boniface Aniebonam agreeing that the allegations against the governor lacked merit.
“All his rights and privileges as a member of our great party have been fully restored,” the party said in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major.
The NNPP commended Governor Yusuf for what it described as his “boldness to confront imaginary powers” allegedly attempting to undermine the party and derail its progress following its successes in the 2023 general elections.
The party leadership further directed the Kano governor, in his new role as National Leader, to work towards strengthening internal cohesion and consolidating the NNPP’s electoral gains ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reiterating its earlier stance, the NNPP maintained that former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and his Kwankwassiya group remain expelled from the party, cautioning media organisations against referring to him as the national leader of the NNPP.
“The expulsion of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso stands,” the party declared, urging journalists to reflect the current leadership structure of the party accurately.
