Hippo Attacks Ravage Farms In Gombe Community

Farmers in Hinna community, Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, have raised alarm over increasing hippopotamus attacks that are destroying farmlands and threatening lives.

The head of farmers in the community, Zakari Ladan, said more than 100 hectares of farmland had been destroyed since September 2025, with losses estimated at over N180 million.

He said the hippo population in the area had risen to over 40, adding that three people had been killed and three others injured in attacks.

“The hippos move freely on our farms and destroy crops daily. A single animal can destroy up to two hectares in one day,” Ladan said.

Another farmer, Haruna Hinna, said his carrot and okro farm was destroyed, adding that one hectare of carrots alone was worth about N1.7 million.

The farmers are calling on the state and federal governments, as well as relevant agencies, to intervene urgently, provide support, and help them adopt safer and alternative farming and fishing practices.
