Mamdani Takes Oath As NYC Mayor In Historic Subway Station

Zohran Mamdani officially became mayor of New York City shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day, taking the oath of office in a private ceremony at a historic, decommissioned subway station in Manhattan.

The Democrat, now the first Muslim mayor of the United States’ largest city, was sworn in by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Mamdani placed his hand on a Quran held by his wife, artist Rama Duwaji, during the ceremony at the former City Hall subway station.

Calling the moment “the honor and privilege of a lifetime,” Mamdani said the venue symbolized the importance of public transportation to the city’s identity and future.

He is scheduled to be sworn in again later in the day during a public ceremony at City Hall, administered by US Senator Bernie Sanders, followed by a celebratory block party along Broadway’s famed “Canyon of Heroes.”
