Pamo Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt has commenced a two-day free comprehensive medical outreach as part of activities marking the 5th convocation ceremony of The Institution.
The facility covers medical and surgical services, it was officially declared open at the hospital premises along Port Harcourt – Aba expressway, Elelenwo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State on Wednesday.
In an interaction with Newsmen , the Coordinator of Clinical Services, Pamo Teaching Hospital, Dr. Akaninyene Ubom, said the initiative was designed to provide care for members of the public suffering from various medical and surgical conditions, but are unable to access treatment due to financial constraints.
He further stated that the programme aligns with the vision of the founder of both the University and the Teaching Hospital, former Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili, to deliver world-class healthcare at an affordable cost.
He explained that throughout the two-day exercise, all patients presenting with general or specialist medical and surgical conditions would receive treatment completely free of charge.
“The medical outreach is aimed at providing free care to members of the public with medical and surgical conditions who are unable to access treatment due to cost.
In line with the vision and mission of the founder of Pamo University of Medical Sciences and Pamo Teaching Hospital, former Rivers State Governor, Sir Dr Peter Odili, to deliver world-class, affordable healthcare, the initiative was organised as part of activities marking the university’s 5th convocation.
For the two-day exercise, patients with both general and specialist medical and surgical conditions are receiving treatment at no cost. All consultations, drugs, laboratory investigations, and surgeries are being fully funded by his excellency Sir Dr Peter Odili, former Governor of Rivers State.” He said.
The Coordinator further assured that the hospital was fully equipped to handle all categories of cases, he highlighted that no patient would be referred elsewhere, as specialists across multiple disciplines had been deployed for the outreach.
He also stressed that all patients who present themselves during the two days would be attended to and treated free of charge
“Pamo Teaching Hospital as a tertiary health facility, we have specialist medical consultants, pulmonologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, general surgeons and specialist surgeons. We have eye doctors, we have gynecologists.
“All categories of doctors are here, they are members of staff of this hospital and they are here consulting, so there is no patient that would be referred externally. All patients would be attended to and treated free of charge, as long as they come here today and tomorrow.”He continued.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the hospital management for the initiative.
Goodness Onyekwere, a beneficiary described the experience as remarkable, he called on members of the public to take advantage of the opportunity.
“Coming here wasn’t easy, but now I can confirm that Pamo Teaching Hospital is wonderful. Anyone who is sick should come and be treated free of charge. I have done my tests and collected my drugs without paying anything.” She said.
