Death Sentence For Uniport Student Who Murdered Lover For Ritual

A court sitting in a Port Harcourt has passed a death sentence to a male student of The University of Port Harcourt for the murder of his girlfriend in 2014.

It could be recalled that after the incident, four students of Uniport, Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku, Chiadika Biringa, and Tekena Elkanah, were framed up at night and lynched. Their deaths caused global uproar that exposed Nigeria’s jungle justice infamy.

On July 31, 2017, a High court sitting in Rivers State sentenced police sergeant Lucky Orji, David Chinasa Ogbada and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (aka Kapoon) to death for their involvement in the murders of the four students.

11 years ago , a female student Justina Otuene a 300- Level Biochemistry student was murdered by her boyfriend, Damian Okoligwe, a 400- Level Petrochemical Engineering student for money ritual, a video clip of the dastardly act was beamed to the world.

On November 26, 2025, the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt convicted and sentenced Okoligwe to death by hanging.

In her judgement , Justice Chinwe Nsirim-Nwosu, held that the prosecution proved beyond responsible doubt, the three ingredients of case of murder against the accused. She described the action of Okoligwe as: “intentional, composed, calculated, coordinated, and evil”.

The judge posited that there was no contradiction in the evidence, hence a proof that Okoligwe actually committed the crime.

“The sentence of this court is that you be taken to a lawful place of execution and there hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.” She pronounced.
