UNIZIK Bans Final-Year ‘Signing Out’ Ceremony Over Violence, Security Risks

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has placed an indefinite ban on the popular “signing out” tradition for graduating students, citing rising cases of violence, chaos, and security breaches linked to the celebrations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Registrar Dr. Chinenye Okeke said the practice, once a harmless tradition, had degenerated into unruly gatherings that disrupted academic activities, endangered lives, and damaged property.

She noted that outsiders often infiltrate the campus during the events, creating further security risks.

The university warned that any student caught flouting the ban would face severe sanctions, including rustication, while outsiders risk arrest and prosecution.

“UNIZIK remains committed to the safety of its community and to maintaining an environment focused on learning and academic excellence,” Okeke said.

With the decision, the institution joins other Nigerian universities that have outlawed rowdy final-year sign-out celebrations in favour of safety and order.
