Muhammad Pate, Minister of Health and Social Welfare, has disclosed that from 2023 to date, nearly N50 billion has been disbursed directly to Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria.

This funding was made possible through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Pate made this known while sharing updates on the country’s primary healthcare sector on his X platform on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The minister noted that the BHCPF is designed to be financed from at least one per cent of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) and other sources, including donors’ contributions, by providing a Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS) aimed at increasing the fiscal space for health, strengthening our national health systems.

“From 2023 to date, more than N50 billion has already been disbursed directly to more than 8,000 primary health care centres across the country through the fund and this has led to increase in the functionality of the primary health care centres alongside many more ongoing PHC rehabilitation projects across all local government areas of Nigeria.

“More specifically, under the leadership of the President, the Federal Government is working with state governments through the IDA Impact Programme to support the revitalisation and upgrade of thousands of primary health care centres across all states and the Federal Capital Territory, this over the past two years.

“In fact, 37 million visits to primary health care centres have already been recorded in the first three months of 2025 alone, predominantly in our population living in rural and marginalised populations” he noted.

Pate added that under the empathic and strong leadership of the President, Nigerians can and should expect that the total transformation of the nation’s primary health care system is not only going to continue, of course, but has already started manifesting tangible results.
