Veteran Actor Chief Kanran Is Dead

Veteran Nigerian actor, Chief Kanran, is dead.

Born Segun Remi, the ace actor passed away in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025.

Seun Oloketuyi, the founder of the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, confirmed Remi’s death in an Instagram post.

The cause of his death is still unknown at the time of filling this report.

Kanran began his academic journey at the Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Lagos, before furthering his education at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). He later hosted a television programme on MTV in Lagos before transitioning into full-time filmmaking.

With a career spanning decades, Kanran made his mark in Nollywood, often portraying affluent characters. He began acting professionally in 1975 and became a household name through his roles in both English and Yoruba-language productions.

He starred in popular TV soap operas such as ‘Images,’ ‘Mirror in the Sun,’ and ‘Megafortune’.

His filmography also includes notable movies like ‘Vigilante,’ ‘Ose-Sango,’ ‘Eri Okan,’ ‘Itunnu,’ ‘Eewo,’ ‘Idunnu,’ ‘Orire,’ ‘Ofa Oro,’ ‘Ajaka Oko,’ ‘Great Bird of Eternity,’ ‘Shattered Bridge,’ ‘Oba Oluaiye,’ ‘Bibi Ire,’ ‘Ilu le’ and ‘150 Million’.

In 2021, the actor opened up about the hardships he faced, revealing that he had been robbed by armed assailants and lost his production equipment in a fire incident in 2017.

The tragedies, he said, left him homeless, forcing him to sleep near church premises.

At the time, he appealed for public support, seeking shelter, transportation, and filmmaking equipment to rebuild his life and career.
