Chelle Praises Super Eagles’ Grit in 1-1 Draw Against Russia, Vows To Build Team Balance Ahead Of World Cup Qualifiers

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has vowed to refine the team’s playing style and build better squad balance following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia in an international friendly on Friday at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

Despite missing key players like Osimhen, Lookman, and Ndidi, the Super Eagles held their own against an in-form Russian side.

A 27th-minute own goal by Ajayi put Nigeria behind, but substitute Tolu Arokodare equalized in the 71st minute; his first goal for the national team.

Chelle admitted the match was tough and highlighted the difficulty of executing their pressing game due to several new faces in the squad.

However, he praised the team’s resilience and second-half improvement.

The draw extends Nigeria’s unbeaten run in 2025 as they prepare for September’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
