US Judge Threatens Contempt Proceedings Against Trump Administration Over Deportation Flights

A U.S. federal judge, James Boasberg, has threatened to hold former President Donald Trump’s administration in contempt of court for defying a court order to stop deportation flights to El Salvador.

Judge Boasberg criticized the administration for what he described as a “willful disregard” of his directive to halt the removal of over 200 migrants last month.

The deportations were carried out despite a standing court order, sparking concerns over the administration’s use of executive powers.

In justifying the deportations, Trump officials cited a rarely used 227-year-old law originally designed to safeguard the United States during wartime.

The legal move drew backlash from rights advocates and judicial authorities alike.

“The Court does not reach such conclusion lightly or hastily; indeed, it has given Defendants ample opportunity to rectify or explain their actions. None of their responses has been satisfactory,” Judge Boasberg stated in his ruling.

The judge’s decision to consider contempt proceedings marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tension between the federal judiciary and the executive branch, highlighting growing legal scrutiny over the extent of presidential powers.
