NERC Slams N628 Million Fine On 8 DisCos For Overbilling Unmetered Electricity Consumers

In a strong move to safeguard the interests of unmetered electricity consumers, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced significant sanctions against eight DisCos. A total of N628 million in fines has been levied on Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola DisCos for violating the monthly energy caps established by the commission for customers without prepaid meters between July and September 2024.

According to a statement issued by NERC on Thursday, this action follows a thorough review of the DisCos’ billing practices during the specified period, which revealed a clear disregard for the energy limits put in place to protect consumers from excessive estimated bills. The commission has not only fined the DisCos but has also set a firm deadline of May 15, 2025, for them to issue appropriate credit adjustments to all affected customers.

This directive ensures that consumers who were overcharged due to the DisCos’ non-compliance will receive due compensation in their subsequent electricity bills. NERC’s firm stance highlights its dedication to enforcing regulatory compliance and ensuring fair treatment for all electricity users across Nigeria, particularly those who are yet to be metered.
