BENIN CITY – Four lawmakers from the Edo State House of Assembly, previously elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers—Hon. Donald Okugbe (Akoko-Edo Constituency II – PDP), Hon. Bright Iyamu (Orhionmwon Constituency II – LP), Hon. Richard Edosa (Oredo West – PDP), and Hon. Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East – PDP)—announced their decision to align with the APC, citing internal crises in their former parties.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Richard Edosa highlighted the divisions within the PDP as a key reason for their exit.
“The PDP is plagued with divisions from the national level down to the state, local government, and ward levels. The party that gave us the platform to win also created the atmosphere that made us leave. We believe in unity and progress, which the APC represents.”
He also praised the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo and President Bola Tinubu, pledging support for the APC-led administration.
“We believe in Governor Okpebholo’s vision for Edo State and the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. That is why we have decided to join forces with the APC to move Edo forward. We will work closely with the governor and the party to build a new Edo State.”
With this defection, the APC has now secured a majority in the Edo State House of Assembly. Minority Leader Hon. Eric Okaka (APC – Owan East) welcomed the lawmakers, crediting their move to Governor Okpebholo’s leadership.
“Before now, we were in the minority, but with this defection, we are now the majority in the House. We will collaborate with the governor to ensure rapid development for Edo State.”
At the APC secretariat, Edo State APC Chairman Emperor Jaret Tenebe officially received the lawmakers, assuring them of fair treatment within the party.
“These lawmakers bring a wealth of experience and have recognized the APC as the party of progress. They have seen the clarity of Governor Okpebholo’s leadership and his commitment to improving the lives of Edo people,” Tenebe stated.
With the APC now holding a legislative majority, the defection strengthens Governor Okpebholo’s influence in the House and could shape Edo’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
