‘I Never Meant To Offend Him’ – Gasperini Clarifies Lookman Criticism

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has addressed the controversy surrounding his post-match remarks about Ademola Lookman, insisting that he never intended to offend the Nigerian star.

Lookman, who recently returned from injury, made an immediate impact in Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League clash against Club Brugge, scoring shortly after coming off the bench. 

However, he later missed a crucial penalty in the 5-2 aggregate defeat, prompting a sharp critique from Gasperini, who called him the “worst penalty taker” he had seen.

The comment did not sit well with Lookman, who felt disrespected. In response, Gasperini has now sought to clarify his words, emphasizing his admiration for the forward’s abilities.

“Lookman felt offended, but I didn’t mean to insult anyone,” Gasperini explained. 

“He came on with fantastic energy against Club Brugge. If he works on his penalties, with his exceptional skills, he can become our first-choice taker.”

Currently sitting third in Serie A, Atalanta will look to put the Champions League disappointment behind them as they prepare to face Empoli on Sunday. Lookman’s response on the pitch could be the perfect way to silence any lingering controversy.
