Just In: Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Dies At 96

Elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96.

The respected nationalist and advocate for true federalism died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025.

His family confirmed his passing in a statement, saying:

“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos home at the age of 96.”

Pa Adebanjo was a distinguished lawyer, former Organising Secretary of the Action Group, and a strong voice in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He was a staunch advocate for restructuring and the parliamentary system of government, believing it to be a more effective model for Nigeria’s democracy.

He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family described him as a relentless fighter for truth, equity, and justice, stating:

“His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria were unwavering, and he fought for these ideals until his last breath.”

Consultations are ongoing with his associates, friends, and interest groups to finalize plans for a befitting funeral.

A condolence register has been opened at his residence in Lekki, as well as his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
