Religious Leaders Meet Rebels In Goma Amid Escalating Tensions

A delegation of religious leaders met with rebel group leaders in Goma on Wednesday as tensions in the region continue to rise following the M23 rebels’ takeover of the eastern Congolese city.

The meeting aimed to foster dialogue and find a peaceful resolution to the escalating conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless residents.

The M23 rebels, one of over 100 armed groups operating in Congo’s mineral-rich east, have tightened their control over Goma, heightening fears of prolonged violence.

Authorities report that at least 2,000 people have been killed in and around the city.

Catholic priest and political figure Donatien Nshole, who was part of the delegation, shared insights from the discussions, stating that rebel leaders denied seeking to divide the country or exploit its resources illegally.

He also called for reopening key infrastructure, such as the airport and port, to aid in the region’s recovery. “We remain convinced that the solution to this crisis is not military,” Nshole emphasized, urging peace efforts.

Goma residents, living under constant fear, are desperate for a resolution. “We all need peace, and they are the ones who can bring it. May God guide them,” said Bahati Faustin, a local resident. However, some expressed frustration over the delayed intervention.

“They did well to come, but it’s too late. This crisis has been ongoing for too long,” said Bisimwa Badeja.

As religious leaders push for dialogue, there is cautious hope that their mediation efforts might lead to a ceasefire and a lasting solution to the conflict that has devastated eastern Congo.
