BREAKING: House Of Reps Committee Proposes Creation Of 31 New States

The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution announced today that it has received 31 proposals for the creation of new states across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu read the letter from the committee during plenary, detailing the conditions that must be met for any state creation request to be approved.

The proposed new states include Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa from Benue; FCT State; Amana from Adamawa; Katagum from Bauchi; Savannah from Borno; and Muri from Taraba, among others.

The South West region has the highest number of proposals, with seven suggested states.

Under Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution, the process requires support from at least two-thirds of the Senate, House of Representatives, and the local government councils of the areas involved.

Additionally, proposals must undergo a referendum as stipulated by the Constitution.

The committee has emphasized that only proposals strictly adhering to constitutional guidelines will be considered, with submissions to be made both in hard copy and electronically to the committee’s secretariat.

This development marks a significant move towards the potential restructuring of Nigeria’s administrative divisions.
