Italy Defends Release Of Libyan Officer Amid ICC Warrant Controversy

Osama Elmasry Njeem, a Libyan military officer wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes, was recently released by Italy—a move that sparked outrage among opposition parties and triggered a legal inquiry into Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Italy’s Justice Minister has defended the decision, citing alleged errors and inconsistencies in the ICC’s arrest warrant.

He pointed to discrepancies in the document, which suggested the alleged crimes began in February 2011 but later mentioned February 2015. The minister has called on the court to clarify these inconsistencies.

Meanwhile, the ICC has demanded an explanation for Njeem’s release, accusing Italy of failing to consult before letting him go.

The court has been investigating war crimes in Libya since the country’s 2011 civil war.
