EFCC Chairman Olukoyede Criticizes Nigerians For Defending Corrupt Leaders

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has condemned the tendency of Nigerians to criticize corruption while simultaneously defending individuals accused of corrupt practices when they face prosecution.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday during a visit by officials of the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), led by Chris Olukolade, Olukoyede emphasized that corruption remains the greatest barrier to Nigeria’s development.

“One of the major problems in Nigeria, which, if tackled, will eliminate underdevelopment, is corruption and financial crimes,” he stated.

The EFCC chairman stressed that the fight against corruption is not solely the government’s responsibility but a duty that requires collective commitment from all citizens. He noted that true national progress depends on widespread integrity and accountability.

Olukoyede also highlighted a contradiction in public attitudes, pointing out that while Nigerians frequently lament corruption, they often rally behind corrupt leaders when they face justice.

“Everybody complains that Nigerians are corrupt, that the system is broken, and that corruption is destroying our nation. But when we investigate high-profile cases and prosecute suspects, the same people take to the streets, carrying placards in support of these corrupt individuals.

“This contradiction shows we are not serious about fighting corruption. It should be a collective effort,” he stated.

Reaffirming the EFCC’s commitment to tackling financial crimes within the limits of the law, Olukoyede called for greater public collaboration in the anti-corruption fight. 

He added that the agency would work closely with the CCC to enhance strategic communication and raise awareness about the importance of integrity and accountability.
