Tems Cancels Rwanda Concert Over M23 Rebel Conflict Backlash

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has canceled her scheduled concert in Kigali, Rwanda, citing concerns over the country’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group operating in eastern DR Congo.

Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she was unaware of the ongoing conflict when she initially promoted the March 22 show at BK Arena.

“I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way,” she wrote. “My heart goes out to those affected.”

Her decision comes amid global condemnation of Rwanda’s alleged backing of M23, which recently took control of Goma, a key city in DR Congo’s mineral-rich east.

Meanwhile, the UK government has stated that it is reviewing British aid to Rwanda over the crisis. Rwanda has denied accusations of direct military involvement, while Congolese authorities insist the country is exploiting the conflict for mineral wealth.

The situation remains tense as M23 leaders vow to continue their offensive toward Kinshasa, the capital of DR Congo.
