Sowore Rejects ‘Unreasonable Conditions’ Following Police Engagement

Presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore announced on Monday, January 27, 2025, that he has been granted bail after an engagement with the Force Intelligence Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.

Sowore was recently summoned by the police to respond to allegations of disobedience to lawful orders, obstruction of public officers, cyberstalking, and alleged attempts to prevent arrests.

In a social media post, Sowore revealed that the Deputy Inspector-General of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him of the bail offer pending the conclusion of investigations.

“The DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, at the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja, just informed me that he has instructed his personnel to grant me bail, pending the conclusion of the investigation,” he wrote.

However, Sowore stated that he would not accept any bail conditions that compromise his innocence, dignity, and integrity.

“If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court. Even then, I know that there is no crime to be investigated; it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the Nigeria Police Force hierarchy,” he said.

Sowore further alleged that his police summons was politically motivated due to his criticism of the tenure extension of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

He also accused the authorities of planning to detain him and transfer him to Lagos for what he described as a “kangaroo trial.”

Efforts to reach the police for a response were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
