18 Dead, 13 Rescued In Enugu Petrol Tanker Crash

A fatal tanker crash in Enugu on Saturday claimed the lives of 18 people, while 13 others were rescued.

The incident involved 17 vehicles, including a petrol tanker, a water tanker, 15 cars, and a tricycle. According to a statement from Olusegun Ogungbemide, Assistant Corps Marshal and Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the petrol tanker, which was carrying premium motor spirit, suffered brake failure.

It lost control and collided with several vehicles, igniting a fire that destroyed 11 of them.

“This tragic event highlights the critical need for proper vehicle maintenance and adherence to road safety regulations,” the statement read.

A total of 31 people were involved in the crash. Ten sustained injuries, three were unharmed, and 18 others were burnt beyond recognition.

The FRSC, with support from Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and other officials, led the rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to clear the burnt vehicles, and traffic has been redirected to ensure smooth movement along the affected route.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged drivers to use alternative routes. He emphasized, “We urge all road users to exercise caution and prioritize safety at all times.”
