Alaafin To Begin Traditional Rites After Canada Trip – Afonja

The Head of Oyo Princes, Chief Mukaila Afonja, has clarified that the newly appointed 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Prince Akeem Owoade, has not yet commenced the traditional rites required for his coronation. 

He assured that all customary processes would begin once the monarch returns from Canada.

During a telephone interview with Vanguard, Afonja disclosed that the new Alaafin has only received his certificate and staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde and has not yet entered seclusion, a critical part of the installation process.

“The seclusion rites will commence as soon as he returns. He will enter Ipebi (seclusion), where he will undergo the necessary traditional rites and preparations for his official coronation in April,” Afonja stated.

Governor Makinde had previously presented the certificate and staff of office to Prince Owoade at a ceremony held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office.

The governor also vowed to prosecute individuals who allegedly attempted to interfere with the selection process.

Despite reports suggesting that the Alaafin-elect had delayed the rites, Afonja explained that the monarch traveled to Canada to finalize his resignation from his job before committing fully to his royal duties.

Responding to concerns about whether the trip violated tradition, Afonja reiterated, “He has not begun the rites yet. When he returns, he will proceed with all necessary customs.”

The Alaafin-elect is expected to spend about 30 days in seclusion, during which he will undergo various lessons and rituals in preparation for his formal installation in April.
