Ex-Sokoto Governor Bafarawa Quits PDP

The initiative, co-founded in late 2024, aims to promote youth entrepreneurship and self-reliance across Northern Nigeria.

In a resignation letter addressed to PDP National Chairman Umar Damagun, dated January 8, 2025, and received by the party’s national office on January 13, Bafarawa cited the need to avoid conflicts of interest as his primary reason for leaving the party.

Bafarawa emphasized his commitment to empowering the youth, stating, “I will now focus my attention on creating awareness for youth entrepreneurship and empowerment initiatives aimed at making them self-productive, reducing redundancy, and fostering self-reliance.”

He expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve and extended his goodwill to the party, saying, “I wish the People’s Democratic Party and its leadership the very best in all their future endeavours.”

Bafarawa, who served as Sokoto State Governor for two terms, played a pivotal role in the re-election of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in 2019. His decision to part ways with his former political ally, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako, marked a significant shift in Sokoto’s political landscape.

The Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI), launched at Arewa House in Kaduna, is expected to drive meaningful change by addressing youth unemployment and fostering entrepreneurial growth in the region.
