Former US President Jimmy Carter Lies In State

The body of former US President Jimmy Carter arrived at the US Capitol on January 7, 2025, to lie in state after a grand and solemn procession.

Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024, was honored with a military ceremony and a public viewing of his flag-draped casket in the Capitol Rotunda.

Carter, who served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, was renowned for his post-presidential humanitarian efforts, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His funeral procession began in Georgia and was accompanied by hundreds of service members.

The Capitol ceremony saw dignitaries, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Chief Justice John Roberts, paying their respects. Military pallbearers carried Carter’s casket to the Rotunda, where members of the public also had the opportunity to honor his legacy.

Carter is the 13th US president to lie in state in the Capitol, a tradition that began with President Abraham Lincoln. His state funeral will take place on January 11, 2025, at the National Cathedral.

President Joe Biden declared Thursday a national day of mourning, and flags were ordered to half-staff for 30 days in Carter’s honor.
