Senegal, Mauritania Begin Gas Production From Grand Tortue Ahmeyim Field

Senegal and Mauritania have officially become gas producers, marking a historic milestone with the commencement of production at the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field.

The offshore gas field, which straddles the maritime border between the two nations, is expected to transform their economies.

British energy giant BP, in collaboration with U.S.-based Kosmos Energy, Senegal’s Petrosen, and Mauritania’s SMH, announced the launch of gas production in a statement, describing the project as a significant achievement after six years of preparation.

The GTA field is projected to produce approximately 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually.

 While Senegal and Mauritania may not rival global gas leaders such as Qatar or Russia, the revenue from this field is expected to bring billions of dollars to both countries, driving economic growth and development.

Senegal’s Oil Minister celebrated the project’s inauguration, calling it a “historic” event that highlights the potential of the region to become a key player in the global energy market.

The GTA project represents a significant step for both nations in harnessing their natural resources to bolster their economies and improve living standards.
