Nigerian Army Provides Update On Extradition Of Biafra Separatist Leader, Simon Ekpa

The Nigerian government has intensified efforts to extradite Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based pro-Biafra separatist leader.

Speaking during a 2024 year-end review on Channels Television, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa, confirmed that the federal government has submitted crucial documents to Finnish authorities to facilitate Ekpa’s extradition.

Simon Ekpa was arrested by Finnish law enforcement on November 21, 2024, for allegedly spreading terrorist propaganda on social media. Following his arrest, a district court in Päijät-Häme remanded him in custody.

Musa expressed satisfaction with Ekpa’s arrest, stating, “Well, I’m sure he is cooling off somewhere. Legal action is going to be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say much about that, but I’m happy he has been arrested.”

Reports indicate that Finnish authorities have frozen Ekpa’s assets, including those tied to companies associated with him and four alleged accomplices, all facing terrorism-related charges.

The Nigerian government has faced mounting pressure to address the activities of the separatist leader, who has been an outspoken advocate for Biafra’s secession.

In addition to efforts against Ekpa, Musa provided updates on military operations targeting Bello Turji, a notorious terrorist and bandit leader. The CDS reassured Nigerians that Turji’s capture is imminent, emphasizing ongoing operations against insurgents and bandits nationwide.

“We’re making progress. Over 120,000 terrorists in the northeast have surrendered. Now, we’re working to distinguish coerced fighters from the masterminds,” Musa said.

Despite intensified efforts, reports suggest Turji has resumed attacks in Zamfara, targeting travellers and communities along the Shinkafi road.

With the extradition process underway, Nigerian authorities remain confident that Ekpa will face justice for his alleged role in promoting violence and instability in the region.
