FG to Distribute 10 Million Prepaid Meters Nationwide In 2025

The Federal Government plans to distribute 10 million prepaid meters across Nigeria in 2025 as part of its efforts to address persistent issues of estimated billing in the electricity sector.  

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, announced the initiative during the commissioning of mobile power substations in Oyo and Ogun States.

He disclosed that the first batch of 2 million prepaid meters will be delivered to consumers by the end of the first quarter of 2025 under the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).

This project is part of broader power sector reforms championed by the Tinubu administration. 

Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, emphasized the initiative’s importance during a recent performance review meeting with stakeholders in the power sector.  

The NMMP aims to eliminate estimated billing, a system that has frustrated consumers with inflated charges due to inaccurate measurement of electricity usage.

The installation of prepaid meters will ensure transparency, empower consumers to manage their electricity consumption, and reduce power theft.  

This ambitious plan also aligns with the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill 2024, which grants states, businesses, and individuals the authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity, further decentralizing the sector.  

Analysts have lauded the government’s efforts to prioritize infrastructural improvements and introduce innovative solutions to enhance the power supply and distribution system.
