Islamic Group Announces Sharia Court Launch In Oyo State

An Islamic group under the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo State chapter) is set to inaugurate a Sharia court in Oyo and surrounding areas. 

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for January 11, 2025, at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre in Oyo, as revealed in a flier circulating online.

The event will feature prominent figures, including the Bashorun of Oyo land, High Chief Yusuf Akinade Olayinka 1, as Royal Father of the Day, and the Aare Musulumi of Oyo land, Alhaji Tajudeen Kamorise, as the Chief Host.

However, the announcement has sparked widespread criticism, particularly on social media, where users expressed concern over the implementation of Sharia law in a predominantly Yoruba region. 

Critics argue it could lead to restrictions on non-Muslims and raise concerns about human rights violations. Several users have called for collective opposition, fearing potential repercussions similar to the experiences in Northern Nigeria.
