Macron Promises Aid After Cyclone Chido Devastates Mayotte

French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged increased support for the residents of Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, as they grapple with the catastrophic aftermath of Cyclone Chido.

During his visit to the archipelago, Macron surveyed the destruction caused by the strongest cyclone to hit Mayotte in nearly a century.

The cyclone struck on Saturday, leaving thousands without water, electricity, or basic necessities.

“We will continue to act together,” Macron assured, noting that additional caregivers and aid had already been deployed.

Wearing a traditional Mayotte scarf over his white shirt, Macron met with residents, medical staff, and patients at the hospital in Mamoudzou, Mayotte’s capital.

He listened to heart-wrenching stories, including accounts of residents who had gone 48 hours without water and others uncertain about the fate of their loved ones.

The death toll in Mayotte stands at 31, with over 1,500 people injured, including 200 critically.

However, fears persist that the actual number of casualties could reach hundreds or even thousands due to the widespread destruction.

Macron’s visit included an aerial inspection of the damaged regions. His office confirmed that his flight carried four tons of food and medical supplies.

Additionally, a French navy ship is expected to arrive with 180 tons of aid and equipment to assist in the ongoing recovery efforts.

Residents continue to appeal for immediate assistance as the island struggles to recover from the devastating storm.
