Tiwa Savage Calls Out Age-Shaming, Double Standards Over Fashion Choices

Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has spoken out against the relentless criticism she faces regarding her fashion choices, particularly age-related comments from Nigerian critics.

During an appearance on the Receipts podcast, Savage highlighted the double standards she experiences compared to global stars. She noted how Beyoncé, also in her 40s, is celebrated for her beauty and confidence, even when wearing bikinis, while she often faces backlash and age-shaming.

“They age-shame me every single day,” Savage said. “They say, ‘A woman of your age, how can you be wearing a bikini?’ I can because I have a body.”

She added, “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis, but Americans celebrate her with, ‘Black don’t crack.’ When you look good at an older age, it’s appreciated there. But here [in Nigeria], they always criticize, saying things like, ‘When her son grows up, he’s going to see this.’ My son will grow up proud, knowing his mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.”

Savage’s remarks spotlight societal expectations and cultural differences around women’s fashion choices and aging, sparking conversations about body positivity and respect for personal expression.
