South Africa To Amplify Africa’s Voice During Historic G20 Presidency – Ramaphosa

South Africa’s presidency of the G20, a first for any African nation, will prioritize the continent’s development agenda and amplify the voice of the Global South, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced during a briefing to launch the presidency.

Taking over the rotating presidency on December 1, South Africa is set to host the G20 summit in November 2025, before passing the mantle to the United States.

“This is a great moment for our continent and the Global South,” Ramaphosa said, emphasizing plans to integrate African and Global South development priorities into the global economic forum’s agenda.

Africa’s vast potential in critical minerals, proposing their use as engines of growth and development across the continent.

Reflecting on South Africa’s long-standing role as the only African voice in the G20 until the African Union (AU) joined in 2023, Ramaphosa advocated for broader representation.

He underscored the need for more African nations, such as Nigeria, to join the forum to ensure the continent’s growing population and economic potential are adequately represented.

“We want Africa’s big noise to be recognized,” he declared, positioning the continent as the next major growth story.

Special task forces during the presidency will focus on reducing inequality, achieving food security, and fostering sustainable development.

Asked about handing over to the incoming U.S. administration led by President Donald Trump, Ramaphosa expressed confidence that the G20’s systems and partnerships would ensure the continuity of its global mission.
