Sinach Sued For N5 Billion Over ‘Way Maker’ Copyright Claim

Acclaimed gospel artist Sinach is facing a N5 billion lawsuit filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, over her 2016 global hit song Way Maker.

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos under suit number FHC/L/CS/402/2024, accuses Sinach of copyright infringement.

Maye claims to be the co-author and co-owner of the song and is seeking damages for what he describes as the cumulative violation of his intellectual property rights.

Sinach, who has gained worldwide recognition as a gospel artist, firmly denies the allegations, asserting that she is the sole creator of the song. She maintains that her global acclaim predates the release of Way Maker.

The case was brought before the court on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Following initial proceedings, the trial has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025, for further hearings.

Way Maker is one of Sinach’s most successful songs, achieving international acclaim and becoming a staple in Christian worship across the globe. The song has been covered by numerous artists and translated into multiple languages.
