Remi Tinubu To Nigerians: “We’re Not Greedy, Just Rich”

The First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, sparked outrage among Nigerians grappling with worsening economic hardships after making controversial remarks during a recent visit to the Ooni of Ife’s palace. 

Against the backdrop of soaring fuel prices—now at ₦1,030 per liter following the removal of subsidies—Mrs. Tinubu’s comments were seen as dismissive of the nation’s economic struggles.

While addressing the gathering, Mrs. Tinubu said, “We are just two years into our administration. We are not the cause of the current situation; we are trying to fix it and secure the future.” She added that the Tinubu administration is focused on building a better Nigeria, albeit with results expected only after two more years.

This reassurance, however, rings hollow for many Nigerians enduring record-high inflation and escalating living costs. The First Lady’s statement urging Nigerians to rely on prayers and divine intervention—coupled with her earlier suggestion to grow their own food—has drawn criticism for its perceived insensitivity.

Mrs. Tinubu, a former First Lady of Lagos State and senator, further inflamed public sentiment when she said, “We are not greedy; we are just grateful to God for our status.” She referenced her family’s wealth and the uncommonness of a rich person ascending to the presidency as a source of gratitude.
