Tinubu Pays Tribute To Saro-Wiwa, Ogoni Martyrs On Remembrance Day

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

In a message marking the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, Tinubu expressed solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and Ogoni citizens to honor those who sacrificed their lives defending Ogoni interests.

The statement, released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, noted that this year’s theme, “After Price, Comes Prise,” symbolizes a commitment to acknowledge past hardships while looking toward a more hopeful future.

“We honor their memory by recognizing the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterized by peace, justice, and sustainable development, especially in the Niger Delta,” Tinubu said.

The President emphasized his administration’s goal of addressing historical grievances to create a unified, prosperous Nigeria. He noted that this vision depends on mutual respect and constructive engagement.

The Ogoni struggle began after oil was discovered in Oloibiri, Ogoniland, in 1958. Efforts by Ogoni leaders to protect their environment from the impact of oil exploration led to harsh repression, culminating in the execution of activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other leaders in 1995.

“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us commit to a future free of such injustices, where the voices of all Nigerians are respected,” Tinubu stated.
