Okebukola, Ex-University Commission Executive Secretary Canvasses Investment In Science, Tech

Prof. Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has called on the Federal Government to invest in science and technology through research to drive economic growth.

Okebukola made this call during the 16th Convocation Lecture of the Bells University of Technology in Ota on Friday. The theme of the lecture was “Leveraging Science and Technology for Boosting the Economy, Youth Empowerment, and Enhancing National Security.” which addressed the transformative role of science and technology in Nigeria.

He noted that science and technology are crucial drivers of innovation and industrialisation, essential for reshaping Nigeria’s economic landscape.“Integrating scientific research and technological advancement can help tackle the nation’s economic challenges by promoting diversification,” he said.

He added that enhancing productivity and creating sustainable development pathways through science and technology can boost industrial efficiency, including automation, and robotics, reducing operational costs, and enhancing global competitiveness.

He said investing in science and technology could reduce Nigeria’s heavy reliance on oil to diversify the economy.

Okebukola pointed out that sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and information technology stand to benefit significantly from scientific progress. He also highlighted biotechnology’s potential impact on agriculture and healthcare.

Okebukola stressed that Nigeria could become a global leader in innovation and economic development through sustained investment in education, research, and infrastructure.

In his welcome address, Prof. Jeremiah Ojediran, Vice-Chancellor of the institution, reiterated the university’s commitment to producing graduates equipped to excel in various fields.
