JUST IN: PDP House Of Reps Member Defects To APC

On Wednesday, a member of the House of Representatives, Abubakar Gumi announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC)

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read Gumi’s defection letter during the plenary, informing lawmakers that Gumi, representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, attributed his decision to internal conflicts within the PDP in his constituency.

According to the Speaker, Gumi cited the presence of two competing PDP chairmen and a lack of party structure in the state as his reasons for leaving.

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, raising a constitutional point of order, urged the Speaker to address the defection according to the Nigerian constitution, reminding him of the responsibility to uphold it.

 “There is a time to do the right thing, and that time has come,” Chinda emphasized, drawing a standing ovation from fellow PDP members.

Despite the opposition, Gumi’s defection to the APC proceeded, met with applause from his new party colleagues. This shift comes just two weeks after Gumi was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on the North-West Development Commission.
