The average fare paid by commuters on a year-on-year basis declined by 32.38% from N1,329.94 in September 2023, fresh data by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown.
This was contained in the Transport Fare Watch for September 2024 released by the bureau.
The report stated that it covers the following categories: bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity (state route) charge per person; air fare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and water way passenger transport.
The average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop increased to 3.45% from N869.35 in August 2024 to N899.31 in September 2024. On a year-on year basis, it declined by 32.38% from N1,329.94 in September 2023.
In another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop was N7,175.06 in September 2024, indicating an increase of 0.22% on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,159.00 in August 2024. On a year-on year basis, the fare rose by 21.26% from N5,917.16 in September 2023.
The average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was N532.00 in September 2024 which shows an increase of 1.48% when compared with the value recorded in August 2024 (N524.22). On a year-on-year basis, the fare decreased by 26.04% when compared with September 2023 (N719.26).
For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in September 2024 was N1,468.23 which indicates an increase of 1.30% on monthly basis. On a year-on-year basis, it increased by 4.36% from N1,406.84 in September 2023.
On state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with N9,587.27, followed by Gombe with N8,330.05.
The lowest fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,579.42, followed by Ebonyi with N5,611.06.
